  • Notes:
The Birmingham Small Arms Co was enjoying great success during the 1930s with some 18 models in production. 1936 was a transitional year with virtually all their range being revised and revamped seeing the vintage designs updated by a new designer and utilising modern technology. This year also saw the introduction of the Q range of motorcycles. The top of the line sporting 500cc single was the overhead-valve Empire Star introduced to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. With similar specification to the Blue Star model, the Empire Star 4.96hp Q8 also sported a high compression piston, special cams and the superb upswept twin exhaust for the twin-port head. A foot gear change and Amal pump carburettor were highly desirable upgrades. The most striking signature of this range of BSAs is the chrome plated fuel tank with Empire Star emblazoned green panels, the inset instrument panel and distinctive chrome plated rims with green and gold pinstriped centres and a quick detachable rear wheel. This sweet example was found by the current owner in the mid north of South Australia after fossicking around farms and home sheds or desirable motorcycles. He and his father comprehensively and sensitively restored the Empire Star about 30 years ago. This charming piece of motorcycling history is believed to be Australian delivered and retains its original features including Dunlop steel wheel rims. It was in running order when last fired up a few years ago and has since been kept in storage. The fuel tank, although structurally sound, is crusty looking on the inside with rusty fuel deposits and varnish. It will need cleaning and or re sealing before use. This motorcycle participated in the Bay to Birdwood Rally in 1988 and would make a fantastic acquisition for a discerning collector of British single-cylinder classics. It is accompanied by an Export Edition BSA sales brochure. This motorcycle will be sold unregistered.
