    1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL
Chassis No: W11304422018456; Engine No: 130983-22-012078
  • Notes:
The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was designed by Paul Bracq, a young Frenchman who had studied at art school in Paris and worked for the industrial designer Philippe Charbonneaux. Bracq joined Mercedes-Benz in 1957 and his first major project was working on the Model W113 which replaced the 190SL and 300SL. Launched in 1963, W113, was originally produced as the 230SL until 1967, being superceded by the 250SL until 1968, whilst the 280SL, the definitive model, was manufactured until 1971. The SL stands for Super Leicht or Super Lightweight. The beautiful and distinctive ‘pagoda’ roof is in fact a safety feature providing greater rigidity and protection in the case of an accident – a patented Mercedes-Benz design developed by the Hungarian, Bela Barenyi in 1956. The Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star is prominent at the front as an homage to the legendary 300SL. This very desirable Mercedes-Benz Factory right hand drive 280SL coupe/roadster with hard top/soft top (as opposed to the 2+2 California model with soft top only) finished in its original white with original blue MB-Tex interior has covered just 116,000 miles and is in highly authentic condition. Delivered new to the United Kingdom, it was imported with full documentation into Australia in 2002. In pristine condition, it is accompanied by a significant collection of paperwork and manuals, a correct set of tools and even the much sought after hardtop stand. It boasts a fully reconditioned Becker stereo system, and a set of new period correct white wall tyres. For aesthetic reasons the current owner has fitted a period correct white steering wheel with horn pad and white automatic-gear knob, though the original black set also accompany the car. Whilst still retaining much of its originality it has undergone a recent bare-metal body re-paint, whilst also having all chrome re-done to correct specifications, along with having a new soft-top roof fitted. All the parts and materials are genuine, having been supplied by the Mercedes-Benz Classic department. This automatic 280SL is fitted with the Bosch Lichteinheit headlights and is powered by the 2.8 litre in-line six-cylinder fuel-injected engine. In total, there were 23,885 Mercedes-Benz 280SL cars manufactured with the vast majority of course being left hand drive (indeed over half of the production run went as left hand drive cars to the United States), making this factory right hand drive car a rarity. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
