Lot Description:A Fine and Large Japanese Meiji Period Bronze Censer, C. 1875
The lid styled in the form of a 62 ken Kabuto with full relief defending eagle. The fat baluster body has a lotus petal collar with two decorative low relief panels on polished ground. Side 1: A Shoki figure with twin axes in a river landscape. Side 2: Birds under peony flowers both panels within a raised scroll border and a connecting field of repeating floral scroll squares and diaper patterns finished in a subtle red/brown coloured patina.The body stands on four Oni style grotesque mask feet. The base has a low relief two character mark under a scene of cranes and a pine tree (minor solder repair). With translation supplied by owner as Takazago and Tenkai ichi fujiwara yoshi in the lefthand margin.
