    William Dobell
    Genuine oddities from the Estate of William Dobell, as gifted to John Wheeler, and sold from his Estate at Cromwells in 2006. The lot includes several signed books from Dobell’s collection including Cartwright’s Botticelli (inscribed London 1939), Hartley’s book on Feininger (inscribed Kings Cross, Sydney, Gleeson’s book on Dobell (T & H, 1964) inscribed by Dobell to John (Wheeler) (spine drifting), Freeman’s book on Dobell (inscribed to Wheeler by the author). Also several pamphlets including the Adelaide Festival art showing of Dobell in 1960, and the Qantas Airways special on Dobell in 1965. A big Artist’s block holds Dobell’s own collection of cuttings on his work (wonderfully chaotic), 23 postcards, the rare David Jones exhibition catalogue for 1954, Dobell’s judges’ medals for the 1964 & 1965 Royal Easter Show, and a small unpublished photograph of Dobell beside a canon, 6 x 4cm, one corner torn, inscribed to back “behind the gun at Windsor Castle. Look closely and you’ll see hair under my snout.”
