    1968 MORRIS MINI COOPER S Mk I

  • Notes:
The iconic Morris Mini, designed by the brilliant Sir Alec Issigonis (knighted in 1969) was released in 1959 as a minimalist economy car. But the ground-breaking Mini was not limited by conventional design, it bristled with innovation. Minis would be modified and used in motor sport but the relationship that was forged by BMC with John Cooper was a master-stroke. Widely acclaimed as a constructor of extremely successful rear-engine racing cars, ranging from 500cc to F1 Grand Prix cars, BMC identified the opportunity to market a higher- performance version of the Mini and commissioned Cooper to carry out a number of mechanical and appearance modifications. The 997cc Mini Cooper, with an improved BMC A- series engine and two-tone paintwork, was released in 1961. This program was enhanced in 1963 and again in 1967, when the 1275 S with its larger capacity engine which developed 76bhp and Hydrolastic suspension in place of the rubber cones was released. Works and privately entered Mini Coopers dominated motor sport in the 1960’s winning the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965 & 1967 along with countless successes on tracks around the world. This Australian built Cooper S was offered for sale to Clem Smith in January 2012 by Mr Alan Dale Marks, an original announcer at Mallala and an expert TV motoring compere, who particularly wanted Clem to retain it in his collection at Mallala. According to notes written to Clem by Marks this car is believed to have been owned by Australian rally driver, Ed Ordinski, albeit not used in competition by him. Approximately 4,986 Mk I Cooper S were produced with around 7,500 Cooper S cars built in Australia in total of both the Mk I and Mk II models from 1965 to 1967. This well presented restored car is finished in the period correct Sandown Red hue with a white roof and a black vinyl interior. It comes with the Cooper S signature Mini Lite wheels and has a current odometer reading of 19,440 miles. This vehicle will be sold unregistered.
