  • Notes:
The first Packard was produced in late 1899. From the outset Packards were aimed at the luxury market and very quickly were perceived as status symbols, with a reputation for producing excellent automobiles which quickly assumed the same level of the grand classics such as Rolls-Royce and Cadillac. The most desirable Packard models were produced in the late 1920s and the 1930s, particularly the straight eights and open cars. With the Great Depression causing a steep decline in the sales of luxury cars, Packard turned to producing slightly less exotic and cheaper, yet still very well built vehicles. However, Packard was not recession proof and despite its demise being delayed by World War 2, Packard joined forces with Studebaker in 1952 before finally giving up the ghost in 1962. Whilst the Packard is often called the ‘Rolls-Royce of Amercia’, the ‘120’, the first Packard model of medium price proved very popular not only in the United States but also in the UK. With proven Packard build quality, refinement and performance the ‘120’ motor was one of the most powerful of all Packards. With a top speed of more than 80 mph, the ‘120’ could cruise comfortably at 70 mph, its eight-cylinder engine of 82-55 mm bore, 107.95 stroke, has a capacity of 4,621 cc. This example of the Packard ‘120’ was delivered new to a Mr Radcliffe of South Australia in 1936. Having changed hands several times between owners in South Australia, this automobile then went interstate to Western Australia and then in 1987 to Sydney, NSW. Over the next eight years the car was restored by its owner Col Ware. Returned to its former glory, in 1994 at the Packard Club Concours the vehicle not only won its class but was also crowned Grand Champion, amongst other awards at various shows at the time. It was purchased in September 2013 by the current owner who has cared for it lovingly. This Packard ‘120’ has travelled just 11,400 miles since its restoration and still presents in excellent condition and, we are told, drives very well.
