• Notes:
  The most famous motor car in the world is surely the Aston Martin DB5. One reason for this fame is the fifty-year association that the vehicle has had with the Secret Agent, ‘sans pareil’, James Bond 007. A silver birch Aston Martin DB5, registration number BMT216A, appeared in the 1964 film, starring Sean Connery, ‘Goldfinger’, and again in ‘Thunderball’ in 1965. Whilst not the only car 007 ever drove, the DB5 is the car with which he is synonymous, and it has featured regularly in the movie franchise, also making appearances with Pierce Brosnan in ‘GoldenEye’ in 1995 and ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’ (1997), and more recently with Daniel Craig in ‘Casino Royale’ (2006) in left-hand drive with Bahamian plates, most dramatically in ‘Skyfall’ (2012), and at the end of ‘Spectre’ (2015). Another reason for the desirability and fame of the Aston Martin DB5 is the intrinsic characteristics of this marvellous vehicle, embodying British luxury, with a modern streamlined design and virile strength, or as Aston Martin would have it, “Power, Beauty, Soul.” The DB5 was built between 1963 and 1965 and in total just 1,059 units were produced. The DB5 shares many characteristics with its predecessor the, DB4, but with considerable changes under the bonnet. Engine capacity was increased to 4 litres and it came with triple SU carburettors and a full synchromesh ZF 5 speed gearbox. The DB5 also came with Girling disc brakes, previously only used on the DB4GT, and 15” wheels. Cost when new was 4,175 pounds sterling and the dohc straight six-cylinder engine was capable of a top speed of 142 mph. This 1964 factory right hand drive Aston Martin DB5 was delivered to its first owner, F.B.Beard of Shrewsbury, Shropshire in the UK on 22nd May 1964, with the registration number FBB1. Now finished in James Bond’s paint colour of choice, Silver Birch, it’s original body colour was Caribbean Pearl. Its original interior trim was Connolly Vaumol hide, in dark blue as it is now. By the late 1980s this DB5 had been brought to Australia. Recent work that has been carried out, includes:- New carpets, interior trim and boot trim; New sunroof covering; New front windscreen and windscreen rubbers; Rims stripped and reconditioned; New muffler and flex on exhaust system; New tachometer; Carburettors and fuel pump rebuilt; New modified motors fitted to the electric windows; New boot, bonnet and trim rubbers fitted; Significant work was also carried out in the early 1990s which is supported by original documentation. This Aston Martin DB5 is accompanied by a copy of its original build sheet from Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd, supplied by Aston Martin factory appointed agents, Aston Service Dorset.
