  • Notes:
The revered Velocette marque was first formed by Veloce Ltd, Birmingham, England. A small, family-owned business, Veloce holds the extraordinary status of making as many hand-built motorcycles during its lifetime as the mass-produced machines of the Norton and BSA and it is renowned for the quality of its products. Velocette’s were always centre stage in international motorcycle racing from the mid-1920s to the 1950s, resulting in 2 World Championship titles in 1949 and 1950 in the 350cc class. Velocette is still-unbeaten in the 24 hours at over 100 mph (161 km/h) record with a 500cc single. They were technical innovators and their patented designs are familiar on motorcycles even today, including the swinging arm rear suspension with hydraulic dampers and the positive-stop foot shift. From 1960, Velocette produced the 500cc Venom in a Clubman racing version, fitted with TT Amal carburettors and a BTH racing magneto with a close-ratio gearbox. This machine had a compression ratio of 9.3 to 1. The Venom Clubman made a feature of highly polished crankcase and gearbox castings. Fitted with rear-sets, low bars and a steering damper, the sporty Clubman was offered with optional accessories including a “megaphone” exhaust silencer, a rev counter and alloy wheel rims. In 1966, the Mk II was launched featuring Thruxton front forks with rubber gaiters, a twin leading shoe front brake and narrowed mudguards, combined with a new exhaust design. The result was an extremely modern performance machine. The Venom used Miller electrics up to 1962, with a belt-driven dynamo and after 1962 this was changed to a Lucas system and the later models with the Thruxton forks had conventional headlamp brackets and separate instruments. This model became the flagship of the Velocette range and the Venom Clubman has become a highly sought after riding machine and an iconic sporting British four-stroke single. In 1965, the Velocette Venom was further developed by Velocette designer Bertie Goodman to create a Thruxton model with a race specification cylinder but it could not save Velocette and the company was forced into voluntarily liquidation, in 1971. This Australian delivered Velocette Venom Clubman 500 Mk I has been held in its current family ownership since 2001. It has the genuine patina of an older restoration which reflects plenty of use and enjoyment on the road. Receipts showing servicing and maintenance are available indicating work carried out by EuroBrit. This motorcycle was last ridden in January 2017 and is in running order. According to records, this motorcycle is likely one of 177 built in 1965 and has been nicely upgraded with Mk II components.
