  • Notes:
The XW Falcon was released in June 1969 replacing the XT Falcon following an extensive facelift featuring a new grille and tail lights. Almost all exterior panels were new and the interior was mostly redesigned. And so the Falcon GT series evolved from the relatively unassuming XR into an Australian icon after the steroidal XW/XY GT-HOs dominated the touring car grids in the early 1970s. It was a natural evolution that saw Ford update the XT Falcon into the XW in 1969 and the GT version was released just five months after the standard model. The XW GT had the sort of rippling muscle good looks that captured the hearts and minds of the swinging sixties and seventies generation with an offset bonnet scoop and matt black bonnet panels, front spoiler, twin driving lights, 6” tyres wearing big rubber and the Super Roo decals that remain its signature. The GT utilised the Windsor 351-cid engine for the first time, fuelled with a four-barrel Holley carburettor; 10.7:1 compression ratio and hydraulic valve lifters developing 290 bhp; fitted with a four-speed manual as standard and an optional three-speed FMX gearbox; a limited-slip differential and uprated power-assisted front disc brakes. The GTs wheels were now 14 inch, 12-slot steel with flat centre caps over the lug nuts and stainless steel dress rims. The classic interior had a full set of gauges, including a speedo calibrated to 140 mph. This car was built to be quick, capable of reaching 200 km/h, and cost $4,200, a substantially more expensive power machine than the standard Falcon. It turned as many heads in Australia as any of its European supercar equivalents. Ford’s famous adage ‘Win on Sunday, sell on Monday’ worked brilliantly for its racing ambitions, and saw the introduction, in August 1969, of the legendary GT-HO specification. The GT-HO was a homologation specially built for racing. It was virtually indistinguishable from a standard GT, but for a higher-performance engine and better suspension. ‘HO’ stood for ‘Handling Option’, and it also gained, among other upgrades, bigger Holley carburettors. Accordingly, this XW GT for auction was assembled in the Ford plant at Broadmeadows in Melbourne. It left the factory with a floor shift auto B code gearbox but this has been replaced with a 4-speed manual transmission. It is presented in its factory livery of Candy Apple Red code G and trimmed with factory Dark Saddle vinyl code K. This car has an odometer reading of 53,000 miles (approx.) and is fitted with a factory radio and 12-slot rims. Accompanying the sale is a set of four 5-slot rims fitted with tyres. Today an original Falcon GT is a desirable collector’s item especially as so few were built with only 2,287 XW GTs built in 1969-1970 consisting of 505 GTs and GTHOs made in Candy Apple Red which include this car amongst the 351 Cleveland powered cars built between January and October 1970. It is generally accepted that the Windsor powered cars were built up to February 1970 with a total of 1268 built. The exact date that the change over to the Cleveland motor took place is unclear and may have continued until March 1970. These few but undisputedly iconic Australian muscle cars represent Ford’s highest achievement in its magnificent car building era in this country which took not only the motoring and social culture by storm but also proved a point by winning no less than 12 Touring Car and Manufacturers Championships from 1971 to 1973 in the hands of racing greats such as Alan Moffatt and Ian “Pete” Geoghegan.
