  • Notes:
Mercedes-Benz produced spectacular cars such as the 540Ks, fabled as the luxury sporting car and limousine of the European aristocracy and infamously by the Nazi regime. This automotive giant has been at the forefront of high performance and safety innovation throughout its illustrious motor racing career and this innovative technology has been adopted by many aspiring car makers throughout the 20th century. Not only this, the marque is so glamourous and stylish that even an association with the name Mercedes Benz and the elegant Tri-Star remains a symbol of excellence. In 1959, Mercedes-Benz debued four new models at the Frankfurt Show including the 220SE all of which shared the unitary-construction body and all-round independent suspension and designated as the W111. This new and beautiful car featured a wider radiator shell, wrap-around windscreen, wider rear window and the timelessly elegant vertical twin headlights. This model series retained the fuel-injected and single-overhead-camshaft engine of the previous 220SE, and with increased compression ratio of 8.7:1, it now had a top speed of107mph (170km/h) with 60mph (97km/h) attainable in under 14 seconds. By 1961, the coupe and convertible models became among the most desirable luxury vehicles available, especially without the rather ungainly tail fins of the earlier saloons. The 220SE was superseded in early autumn 1965 by the 250SE, which featured the new 2.5-litre M129 engine. This bigger and more powerful unit had an output of 150hp at 5500 rpm. This advancement, on the smaller engined 220SE model, gave the vehicle a significant improvement in top speed. The car’s appearance, as always for Mercedes-Benz, was gorgeous, the only changes affected were the new 14-inch rims and new look hub caps which housed the larger disc brakes and new rear axle. A mere 5,259 examples 250SE coupe were built before the introduction of the replacement 280SE in late 1967. The elegant German engineered, pillarless coupe models are highly sought after for their timeless high style and driving pleasure. This stylish Mercedes Benz coupe has been held by its current owner since 2003 and has been maintained by Worrells, of Melbourne. The car has been enjoyed and driven sparingly over these 14 years. It is presented in burgundy livery with patinated cream MB-Tex vinyl interior. This much-admired Melbourne-based car has an odometer reading of 122,000 miles. Mossgreen is pleased to present a great opportunity to acquire a handsome usable collectors’ car at auction, providing the next custodian with the opportunity to enjoy the pleasure of driving in classical style and elegance.
