    1897 (Feb.19) Victorian 1d Postal Card from Melbourne to Bendigo, with hand-written message
    which includes "Going to see the Mining Exhibition tomorrow" and incorrectly dated "1896".
  • Notes:
    Melbourne Argus reported that: The Mining Exhibition was brought to a close this evening, when his Excellency the Governor attended to distribute gold medals and certificates to successful exhibitors before a large attendance. The Minister of Mines stated that the exhibition had been opened two months and had been visited by 50,000 people. Referring to the mining industry, he said that during the last 46 years the Australian mines had yielded gold to the value of £400,000,000. His Excellency congratulated the colony on the advance made in the mining industry, and stated that up to June 30 last 61,000,000oz of gold valued at £244,000,000 had been won from Victorian mines.
