    EXHIBITION PASSES: Special Pass issued to Mr Joseph Hampton and Staff Pass
    (with photograph) issued to Mr. David Dow, clerk for the Centennial Exhibition. Both in leather folders in good condition. (2 items)
  • Notes:
    David M Dow was the son of the Minister of Lands & Agriculture, the Honourable John L. Dow. He had studied at Dookie Agricultural College and then worked briefly with the Department of Agriculture. In the 1890's and following his father's interest in politics, David contested several elections in the seat of Kara Kara (St. Arnaud, Victoria). Based in Melbourne, he followed a career in journalism and travelled to the United States as an agricultural journalist (1907). Moving into public service, he worked as Commonwealth Publicity Officer for the Prime Minister's department (1920-1924). He held the position of Official Secretary for Australia in the United States (1927-1931), and then continued as acting Commissioner General until March 1938.
