• Lot Description:
  Krefft, Johann Ludwig Gerard. The Mammals of Australia, illustrated by Miss Harriett Scott, and
  Mrs. Helena Forde, for the Council of Education, with a short account of all the species hitherto described. Folio, with 16 fine lithographed plates and descriptive letterpress, bound in (little rubbed) publisher’s half calf, front board lettered in gilt. Sydney, Thomas Richards, Government Printer, 1871.
• Notes:
  Rare. This is generally considered to be Krefft’s most important work. It is certainly the most attractive, with beautifully executed and designed lithographed illustrations by Harriet Scott and her sister Helena Forde (née Scott), each enhanced by a charming and often anecdotal landscape depicting the habitat of each species. Harriet and Helena Scott, daughters of naturalist Alexander Scott, are generally considered to be, after Lewin, the most accomplished Australian natural history artists of the colonial era. Ferguson’s collation is imperfect, calling for only 15 plates, as does the list of contents, where 16 are in fact required for completeness (i.e. the sixteenth plate of the Black–Striped and Common Wallabies).
