  • Notes:
Rare: as the title implies this is, literally, an “advertiser” with very numerous full and part-page advertisements for various South Australian businesses. The feature of the publication is a series of twenty fine lithographs of scenes in Adelaide and the South Australian countryside – essentially full-page but bordered by small advertisements. While possibly – or probably in our opinion – these are based on photographs, it is strange that the lithographer remains resolutely anonymous. Various artist-craftsmen worked for Hussey & Gillingham and so there is not, to our knowledge, an obvious candidate from within the firm’s stable. In their full-page advertisement of page 22, Hussey & Gillingham do mention with pride having secured the services of the artist “Mr. Barrett”, who had worked on Brown’s Forest Flora of South Australia, and for want of a better he might be suggested as the responsible artist. We have been unable to trace another copy of this rare piece in any Australian institution, although the State Library of South Australia appears to have an incomplete copy, which lacks the wrappers, preliminaries and the final two leaves, and is consequently catalogued inaccurately.
