  • Lot #:
    277
  • Lot Description:
    Jenny, R. Suburbs of Melbourne
Oblong duodecimo (?), 135 x 250 mm, nine leaves, comprising elaborately decorated short title page (printed in gilt, blue, green, and black) and 16 full-page glazed engraved views of Melbourne suburbs, all signed “R. Jenny” in the image (one signed with initials only), bound in original publisher’s, burgundy fine pebble grain cloth over bevelled boards, the front board very extensively decorated in gilt, the design repeated in blind on the back board, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. No imprint but almost certainly Melbourne, for The Artist, circa 1870s.
  • Notes:
Extremely rare and attractive souvenir publication, evidently a precursor of the style of glazed photoview produced in huge numbers as tourist souvenir leporellos. The present work is more grandly presented than any such souvenir we have seen noted hitherto. The suburbs illustrated are: East Melbourne, Collingwood, Prahran, Hotham, Carlton (showing the University), Emerald Hill, Sandridge, Williamstown, Kew, Richmond, South Yarra, Fitzroy, St Kilda (beach), St Kilda, Hawthorn, and Toorak.
