  • Lot Description:
Fergusson & Mitchell (publishers). The Land of Gum Boughs and Wattle Bloom. Being a Series of Views
of Australian Scenery. Dedication by kind Permission to His Excellency the Earl of Hopetoun, G.C.M.G. [portfolio title]. Oblong folio, 20 (of 24?) tinted photolithographed plates, in a printed card portfolio (this with repairs), preserved in a collector’s cloth portfolio. Melbourne, Fergusson & Mitchell, n.d. but circa 1890.
  • Notes:
Rare: an apparently unrecorded issue. This fine pictorial work, a celebratory piece, possibly a patriotic gesture coinciding with the appointment of the Earl of Hopetoun as Governor of Victoria in 1889, was first published in 1890 in two series, comprising a total of 24 lithographs of scenes in Victoria. That first issue is also very rare, with only two copies in Australian institutions (State Library of Victoria and Mitchell Library). The present portfolio is a new issue or edition as one series, possibly of only the twenty plates found here. In the absence of another recorded copy of this re-issue it is impossible to say with certainty how many plates make a complete set: reissues of illustrated works often comprise ‘short sets’. Fergussson & Mitchell looked back with this publication several decades earlier, to the grand portfolios of Chevalier, Gill, Troedel, and von Guérard, a genre which had effectively been superseded by the new and oh-so-terribly-up-to-date photographic album. It is difficult to date this new issue or edition with any degree of confidence. It was issued at some time after 1890 and may well have coincided (again) with Hopetoun’s later appointment as the first Governor General of the Commonwealth in 1901.
