Booth, Edwin Carton, et al. Australia, by Edwin Carton Booth, F.R.C.I. Illustrated with Drawings by Skinner Prout
    N. Chevalier, &c. &c. [engraved title]. Two volumes, quarto, with engraved titles, 111 fine steel-engraved plates, and eight full-page coloured maps, some foxing; bound in the original publisher’s half green morocco, elaborately decorated in gilt, both spines with attractive gilt vignettes of sheep, kangaroo, emu, digger’s pick and shovel, and spine title “Australia Illustrated”, blocked in gilt on the front boards is an “Advance Australia” coat of arms, extremities a little rubbed, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. London, Virtue and Co., [1874-6].
  • Notes:
A most attractive pictorial record of colonial Australia, with over one hundred justly admired steel-engraved views. This was the last of the large-scale steel-engraved Australian view books. There were a number of distinct issues of this work in various formats over 1874-6 and the number of plates and maps varies in most copies of the two-volume issue. The list of illustrations in the present copy calls for only 98 plates and five maps: copies such as the present one, with 111 plates and eight maps, form a regular issue and this is the most frequent collation noted in our records. Ferguson, apparently in despair, does not venture a count of the plates, while Craig’s slightly more extended – but still simplified – account of the two-volume issues notes only two of many more variants. This copy is uncommonly clean, virtually free of the usual toning. Craig OTP, pp.182 – 191; Ferguson, 7280 (poorly collated).
