  • Lot Description:
Broinowski, Gracius J. The Birds of Australia… with a descriptive account of the life and characteristic
habits of over seven hundred species. Six volumes, folio, with 303 chromolithographed plates, a back wrapper from one of the parts issues printing the prospectus loosely inserted, fine and clean – and uncommon thus – in the publisher’s original deluxe binding of black morocco, spines extra gilt, gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt. Melbourne, Charles Stuart, [1887] – 1890 – 1891.
  • Notes:
First edition: a fine set of the rare and handsome deluxe issue in six morocco–bound volumes, extra gilt. Broinowski’s Birds was designed to bring Australian ornithology to a much wider audience than could be reached by Gould’s expensive series of handcoloured lithographs published decades earlier. The prospectus for this ambitious project announced that “the illustrations will be executed in the highest style of modern chromo–lithographic art, by Mr Broinowski, assisted by Signor Giulielmo Autoriello, of Naples... Each plate will be finished by hand–colouring so as to faithfully display the various features of the natural beauties of the living species…”. Broinowski’s production of over three hundred chromolithographs in Australia in 1890 was an exceptionally demanding undertaking and his book is a monument to Australian printing technology, not to mention the author’s remarkable and dogged enthusiasm. Ayer/Zimmer, p. 100; Casey Wood, 262; Ferguson, 7458 (cloth issue only); Nissen, IVB 148; Nissen, SVB 71; Whittell, p. 78.
