  • Lot Description:
Tulloch, David. First Series. Ham’s Five Views of the Gold Fields of Mount Alexander and Ballarat
in the Colony of Victoria. Drawn on the spot by D. Tulloch, Engraved and Published by Thomas Ham. Oblong folio, letterpress title-page and five richly handcoloured tinted lithographed plates, with the leaves of letterpress description, in the original cloth-backed original wrappers (back wrapper lacking), the front wrapper illustrated by six vignettes of goldfields scenes by Tulloch, preserved in a folding cloth box. Melbourne, Engraved and Published by Thomas Ham, 1852.
  • Notes:
First edition: the rare handcoloured issue of probably the earliest colonial plate book inspired by the Victorian gold rushes. Tulloch’s views are perhaps the best known goldfields illustrations after those of Gill. In contrast to Gill’s small octavo volume of lithographed sketches published in the same year, Tulloch’s work is a large volume, the first Victorian plate book published in a large format. The tinted lithographed plates were printed in three colours and appear to be the earliest examples of three-colour printing published in Australia. Tulloch had arrived in the Port Phillip District in 1848 and was employed by Thomas Ham as an engraver, a trade he continued in for many years. These five views published in 1852 are unquestionably his best and most enduring work. Tulloch’s book is also sometimes known as “Ham’s Views” because the printed title-page gives greater prominence to the publisher than the artist. The title-page describes these five plates as the “First Series” but no further series was issued. Ferguson, 17391; Kerr, pp. 342 and 812-3; Wantrup, 253.
