  • Lot Description:
Sherer, John. The Gold-Finder of Australia; How He Went, How He Fared, and How He Made His Fortune
Edited by John Sherer. Illustrated with Forty-eight Magnificent Engravings, from authentic sketches taken in the colony. Octavo, pp. xii, 372 + frontispiece (additional pictorial title-page) and 47 other engraved plates, bound in old half calf. London, Clarke, Beeton, & Co., Foreign Booksellers, 148, Fleet Street, [1853].
  • Notes:
First edition of this highly popular book, the plates mostly based on S.T. Gill originals – which accounts for their charm – although Sherer acknowledges only the work of the London engraver W.A. Nicholls, merely noting that illustrations are “taken from Drawings made on the spot”. Notoriously, these plates are for the most part reproduced, without permission and without attribution, from Gill’s Sketches of the Victoria Gold Diggings and Diggers As They Are. Ferguson, 15634; Wantrup, p. 320.
