Gill, Samuel Thomas. Part the First Containing Six Lithographic Sketches of Scenery In & Around Sydney
By S.T.G. [together with] Part the Second. Containing Six Lithographic Sketches of Scenery In & Around Sydney By S.T.G. [wrapper titles]. Two parts, oblong quarto, with twelve lithographed plates in total, six in Part the First on large paper and with original handcolouring, six tinted lithographs in Part the Second on ordinary paper (a few small stains barely affecting the images), in the original lithographed lemon yellow paper titling-wrappers (Part the First neatly respined; Part the Second with the front wrapper expertly restored), each protected in, respectively a collector’s slipcase and a folding cloth box (unmatched). Sydney, Printed & Published by Allan & Wigley, Bridge Street, [1856].
  • Notes:
Of signal rarity. In 1856 when his reputation in Melbourne was at its height, Gill travelled to Sydney, hoping to repeat his success there. While Gill produced quite a number of important works in Sydney, in particular a number of fine separately-issued prints, his stay there was not a success due as much to his developing alcoholism as to the recession the city was experiencing. He returned to Melbourne in 1862. The two illustrated books he produced in Sydney are both of the greatest rarity. The present series of Lithographic Sketches of Scenery In and Around Sydney was the first of these works. Issued in two oblong quarto parts, sewn within yellow illustrated titling-wrappers, each part comprising six delightful lithographs of Sydney scenes. Part the First is significantly rarer than the Part the Second – a very small group of uncirculated copies of the second part is said to have been discovered last century. The first part in the Joachim set is the special handcoloured issue on large paper, virtually unrecorded. Coloured or uncoloured this is perhaps the most uncommon of Gill’s books: the (uncoloured) Davidson copy is the only set sold at auction that we have been able to trace. Bowden p. 125; Ferguson, 9923 and 9923a; Kerr, p. 297; Wantrup, 249 (title transcription slightly in error); Wettenhall, 109 (Part the Second only).
