Carter,Charles Rooking. Victoria, The British “El Dorado;” or, Melbourne in 1869
Shewing the Advantages of that colony as a field for emigration. By a Colonist of twenty years’ standing and late Member of a Colonial Legislature. Octavo, with folding coloured map, two plates, with half-title and inserted advertisements, modern half calf, top edge gilt. London, Edward Stanford, 1870.
  • Notes:
First edition. A Victorian man of affairs, Carter wrote this excellent short account of the colony from a commercial point of view. His scarce book, published over a decade after Caldwell’s and Train’s accounts of the commercial life of the colony, offers a useful contrast. Of special interest is his account of the quartz mining industry on the Victorian goldfields, an industry by then well established but still at its most embryonic in 1855. Carter wrote anonymously, the title-page only describing the author as “a colonist of twenty years’ standing, and late Member of a Colonial Legislature”. Ferguson, 7986.
