London, T. & W. Boone, 1838.
  • Notes:
First edition. The narrative of three expeditions of the greatest importance, both for the discoveries made and for the precision with which Mitchell was capable of surveying. The first expedition (1831-2) surveyed the area between the Castlereagh and the Gwydir Rivers, and the second (1835) set out to trace and chart sections of the Murray and Darling rivers. On his third and most important expedition (1836) Mitchell was instructed by Governor Bourke to complete the survey of the Darling but, instead, he followed that river upstream for only a short distance, turning back to explore what appeared to be more fertile lands south of the Murray. Retracing the Murray to its junction with the Loddon River, he turned south into the undiscovered lands of western Victoria, naming this new land of unvarying richness ‘Australia Felix’. It is upon the outstanding results of his third expedition that Mitchell’s reputation as an explorer rests. The discoveries of Mitchell and Sturt in the south-east brought about a heightened level of interest in Australia, which had waned during the late 1820s and early 1830s. Billot, 129; Ferguson, 2553; Wantrup, 124a.
