  Gardiner, Arthur (artist). Original Sketch book
  Oblong octavo sketchbook, around 200 pages, with pencil, pen and ink, and watercolour sketches, ranging from preliminary pencil or ink sketches to more finished watercolour sketches, over 150 sketches in all, bound in the original stationer’s embossed calf with brass hinge. Various places, circa 1832 – circa 1850.
• Notes:
  Arthur Gardiner, presumably a sometime member of the Royal Navy, was an artist draughtsman active as a landscape sketcher in Tasmania from the 1850s. The present sketchbook comprises sketches of scenes in and around Hobart and the adjoining coastal regions. Where dated, these date from 1847 – 1850, although one is dated as early as 1834. There are a few other sketches of, for example, Teneriffe, Gibraltar, the Channel, even one of the Erebus and Terror on an ‘iceberg’. The prominent mention on the pastedown of H.M.B. Fantôme and H.M.S. Bramble “Sailed April 1832” suggest quite strongly that Gardiner sailed on one of those vessels, probably the Fantôme (“Fantome H.M.B. 15 Guns March 1832”). An auction entry from some time in the first half of the last century (probably Sotheby’s, London) has lazily identified the sketchbook with the survey of H.M.S. Fly in 1842-6, with H.M.S. Bramble as tender; a subsequent owner has taken to this error with enthusiasm and inserted a number of pieces, including an eleven-page manuscript index based on that misapprehension.
