  • Notes:
The second and preferred edition of Harris’s great collection of travels, first published in 1705. This extensively revised edition was prepared by Dr. John Campbell and issued in parts between 1744 and 1749, with the title-pages to each volume dated accordingly 1744 and 1748. Campbell added narratives of those voyages – many of Australian interest – which had been undertaken or become known since the first edition and had new maps prepared for this edition by Emmanuel Bowen. The most notable of the new maps was Bowen’s version of the Thévenot Tasman map, “A Complete Map of the Southern Continent surveyed by Capt. Abel Tasman”. This is the first English map of Australia (and the first map of Australia since Thévenot in 1663). Campbell actively encouraged further voyages to the imperfectly known Southern Continent in continuation of the achievements of those (including Quirós, Pelsaert, Tasman, and Dampier) whose narratives he published. Included on the Bowen map of Australia are two short articles. One refers to Quirós’s voyage while the other urges the colonisation of the continent: “Whoever perfectly discovers and settles it will become infallibly possessed of territories as rich as fruitful and as capable of improvement as any that have hitherto been found…” Among the accounts added to this edition are Rogers’s circumnavigation of 1708 – 11, Clipperton and Shelvocke’s circumnavigation of 1719 – 22, Bering’s voyage of 1725-6, Roggeveen’s Pacific voyages of 1722 – 33, and Anson’s circumnavigation of 1740-4. Arnot, 23; Clancy, 6.25; Davidson, pp. 37-38; Hill 2, 775; Landwehr, 261; Perry, p. 60 and pl. 29; Sabin, 30483; Schilder, map 87; Tooley, 241.
