Flinders. Westall, William. Views of Australian Scenery. Painted by Westall, Engraved by Byrne [wrapper title]
Oblong quarto, nine handcoloured engraved plates, bound by Morrell with the original wrappers (and title label) in half morocco, gilt label on the front board, top edge gilt, the James Edge Partington copy with bookplate. [London, 1814].
  • Notes:
One of the extremely rare handcoloured copies of the superior issue on large Whatman paper, with impeccable provenance. This is the separate publication of the nine steel engraved plates after William Westall’s paintings that illustrate the two text volumes of Flinders’s Voyage. In many instances these are the earliest published views of parts of the Australian coast. The views are King George’s Sound, Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln, Port Jackson, Port Bowen, Wreck-Reef, Gulf of Carpentaria, Malay Road, and Murray’s Islands. Abbey, 567; Davidson, p. 125; see Ferguson, 597; see Wantrup, 74a.
