  • Lot Description:
Cook. Gianetti, Michelangiolo. Elogio del Capitano Giacomo Cook letto da Michelangiolo Gianetti
nella publica adunanza della Reale Accademia Fiorentina. Elogy of Captain James Cook, composed and publickly recited before the Royal Academy of Florence… Folio, with facing titles in Italian and English, each with an engraved medallion portrait after the Royal Society Cook medal, preliminaries with early collector’s stamps, without the front free endpaper in half calf of the period with gilt spine and distressed label, extremities worn. Florence, Printed for Gaetano Cambiagi, Printer of his Royal Highness, 1785.
  • Notes:
Rare: a fulsome essay in honour of Cook, florid and rhetorical in the Latin manner. Cook’s career as hydrographer and explorer is recounted and lauded and Cook is elevated beyond mere mortals. Beautifully printed in the best Italian tradition (think Bodoni). The ‘elogio’ – one of the more prominent pieces contributing to the European apotheosis of Cook – is dedicated to Sir Horace Mann, then English ambassador to the Court of Tuscany. Beddie, 1957; Holmes, 51; Kroepelien, 486; Sabin, 27267.
