• Notes:
  The first French edition of James Magra’s surreptitious account of Cook’s first voyage that had been published anonymously in 1771 by Becket and de Hondt several years before the publication of Hawkesworth’s official account. As du Rietz pointed out (Kroepelien, 218), “the French, before the appearance of Hawkesworth’s work in 1773, believed the anonymous account of 1771 to be the official narrative of the expedition, the announced forthcoming work by Hawkesworth being supposed to deal with the scientific observations only…”. This issue was published as a supplementary volume to the 1772 Paris octavo edition of Bougainville’s Voyage Autour du Monde. Beddie, 697; Kroepelien, 219.
