  • Notes:
First editions: perhaps the best known of all ‘Barrington’ pieces. This elaborate production was originally issued in parts over 1802-3 and subsequently sold bound up in volume form. “These two volumes have no real relationship with the earlier 1795 ‘Barrington’ Voyage apart from the unauthorised use of his [Barrington’s] name… In fact these volumes are largely extracted, more or less verbatim, from David Collins’s two-volume account, with the addition of some very crude coloured illustrations” (Wantrup, somewhat more contemptuously than he might have been – this ‘Barrington’ is, in fact, the earliest work with handcoloured topographical views of New South Wales). The History was first published in 1802 and was clearly such a success that Jones decided to prepare a ‘prequel’, describing the voyage from England to Botany Bay, for publication in 1803. Being initially published in parts, and that by a not notably fastidious publisher, these two Barrington volumes evidence much variation, especially as regards preliminary and terminal matter. Casey Wood, 222; Ferguson, 367 and 345; Wantrup, pp. 96-7.
