  • Notes:
Tony Bevan creates works that have a strong emphasis on expression and mark making. In an interview with Marco Livingstone Bevan expressed of his practice ÒBecause I am painting and drawing on the floor, the debris of their making gets locked in there with the acrylic medium and remains visible É Charcoal is a very raw material, very direct; I think itÕs that directness, those qualities that attract me to it.Ó?1 Architecture is a primary influence and inspiration for Bevan in producing large scale graphic compositions. The present work Studio Furniture PC0222, 2002, encapsulates BevanÕs ability to push to boundaries between representation and abstraction, construction and deconstruction. Bevan comments of his architectural works; ÒÉthe buildings - whether they are deconstructed or partially constructed - allow you to pass through themÉ You can even look back to old nativity paintings, the majority of them all have an open roof, and so itÕs this transition between one particular state into another higher stateÓ?2 Over a period of thirty years, Bevan has developed a distinctive style that negotiates the space between abstraction and figuration. Bevan is internationally recognised as one of BritainÕs most distinguished and distinctive contemporary artists. BevanÕs works are held in the collections of numerous major public institutions across Europe, the United Kingdom and America including; British Museum, London, Tate Gallery, London, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. 1 Tony Bevan Paintings 2000-2003 with a Interview by Marco Livingstone, Michael Hue-Williams Fine Art, UK, 2003, pp.66-67; 2 Tony Bevan Paintings 2000-2003 with a Interview by Marco Livingstone, Michael Hue-Williams Fine Art, UK, 2003, p.61
