  • Notes:
With a career spanning over sixty years, Ken WhissonÕs work holds a unique place in Australian art. Committed to painting and drawing, Whisson has an unconventional and highly personal aesthetic which combines simplified details, distorted forms and the manipulation of perspective and the relationship between figures, objects and ground. Restlessness is a characteristic throughout WhissonÕs work with forms often appearing in a state of flux. Pictures are split in to abstract sections with objects colliding and jostling, or use the white ground of the canvas to spare enigmatic forms, such as Green Horse (1975). Later on, his paintings develop a remarkably upbeat sense of space, as demonstrated in Two Women Moving Through a Large House (1995-1999) with the use of bright, fresh colours and confidently sculpted forms. Unwilling to theorise, Whisson believes that art happens when the end of the brush meets the canvas. His paintings are as various as thoughts themselves and just as difficult to pin down. Thoughts as They are About to Form No, 3 (1989-1994) seems familiar, drawing together experiences and observations that virtually everyone can relate to. Exhibited regularly throughout Australia, WhissonÕs works can be found in all the major public collections, including the British Museum, London and the Chartwell Collection, New Zealand. He is most fully represented in the National Gallery of Australia, which owns more than 70 paintings, drawings and prints.
