  • Lot Description:
A 1974 Marlboro Holden Dealer Team Holden Torana SLR 5000
Chassis: ALH000378MThis important Australian racing car was driven by both Colin Bond and the legendary Peter Brock. Restored to original specifications and in exceptional condition, this piece of Australian automotive history has tremendous provenance.TESTIMONY OF THIS VEHICLE BY JOE FELICE, MANAGER HOLDEN MOTOR SPORT (1970-1980)The Marlboro Holden Dealer Team Torana SLR 5000 was for the Holden Brand a transitional race car designed to take Teams campaigning Holden Torana from racing 6 cylinder XU1's, albeit with great success, to racing V8 equipped cars. Competing against the much more powerful Ford V8 GTHO's at the time, Holden felt that the XU1 had reached the end of its development and started planning to bring in the V8 Torana L34, which was a car designed with Touring Car Racing in mind. Whilst the L34 option was being developed it was decided to race the Torana SLR 5000 for an interim period.A Torana SLR 5000 was prepared by M-HDT and raced for a time by both Peter Brock & Colin Bond in National Touring Car Events with success, posting some wins and pole positions in its short racing career. It was the first Torana V8 raced by the Holden Dealer Team.Upon the introduction of the Torana L34 the SLR5000 became superfluous to the Marlboro Holden Dealer Team's requirements and bowing to pressure from the Western Australian Holden Dealer Group and the Marlboro Company, who complained about lack of representation & exposure in Western Australia, I instructed HDT to transfer the SLR 5000 together with spares to Wayne Negus in Perth to campaign the car in a Production Touring Car series being run in Perth WA. Wayne Negus was a M-HDT driver & mechanic in Melbourne for some years but had returned to live in his home town of Perth. Wayne Negus campaigned the car with a lot of success in WA for some time, before the vehicle was retired. The Torana SLR 5000 played a major part in enhancing Holden Torana's unparalleled racing reputation and was another successful and important car in the history of The Marlboro Holden Dealer Team," testimony of Joe Felice, Manager- Holden Motor Sport (1970-1980) of this vehicle.MHDT Race History SLR5000May 8th 1974- testing at Calder [ Motoring News International May 17th]May 12th 1974- Production Touring Car Races - Calder - back to front HDT sticker on front of car [ Auto Action No 86]May 19th 1974 - Surfers [Auto Action No 86]June 9th 1974 -Adelaide [Chequered Flag - page 26] [Motoring News June 14th]June 23rd 1974 -Oran Park - Colin Bond [Auto Action No88, page 9]July 7th 1974 -Sandown - Peter Brock -Toby Lee series -Sports Sedan [Auto Action No89]July 21st 1974 -Amaroo - Colin Bond -won Chesterfield Sun Series round [Auto Action No 90, page 7]August 4th 1974 -Lakeside -4IP Production 500 -crashed SLR5000 [Racing Holdens Mag, Auto Action No 91, page 9]SLR5000 Owner/Driver History1974 MHDT - Drivers: Peter Brock & Colin Bond1974 to 1976 - Repaired & restored : John Dixon1976 to 1980 - Wayne Negus1980 to 1983 - John Morris1983 to 1985 - Glenn Baker1985 to 1988 - David Taylor1988 to 2007 - Peter Gillison2007 to present - Current owner"
