Lot Description:An unusually complete grouping of four fire service medals
all awarded to Cyril Francis Maguire (1889-1957), comprising two 25-year gold stars and two 5-year fire service medals plus an original newspaper cutting, two copied photographs and an Auckland Metropolitan Fire Brigade cap badge. -
Notes:One pair is awarded by the United Fire Brigades Association (UFBA) the other by the Auckland Fire Board (AFB). AFB silver medal by A. Kohn with four extra bars engraved with Maguire’s rank and ranging from five to 25 years. The rarer AFB 9ct gold star also by Kohn with one extra 9ct gold 30-year bar. The UFBA 9ct gold five-year medal (Teutenberg die-struck) has 10 two-year bars. Initial date for the award 20.4.21 with the UFBA gold star award dated 20.4.41. This medal bears two extra 15ct. gold two-year bars. This lot includes a colourised photo of the recipient wearing his two gold stars and a group of four fire officers also wearing pairs of 25-year awards. The newspaper cutting details a dinner held at the Central Fire Station, in honour of four retiring fire service officers. The comment is made that these men had given a total of 144 years’ service and would be the example set to younger members of the brigade. It is possible that the group photo was taken on this occasion. Maguire is listed as chauffeur on the National Reserve lists dating from WWI, the same rank on his AFB medal. Maguire’s service totalled 33 years and he retired with the rank of District Officer based at the Mt Eden station but having served elsewhere in the Auckland region
