• Lot Description:
  A significant pair of George III silver candlesticks
  engraved to the bases with the a coat of arms of James Balfour of Balgonie, Fife impaling the arms of Lady Eleanor Maitland, (m. 1815) daughter of James Maitland, Earl of Lauderdale, above his motto ‘Virtus ad aethera tendit’; his crest, a palm tree, engraved to the nozzles. Each has a baluster shaped form with a waisted knopped stem onto a shaped base in the English Rococo style. The baluster capitals embellished with graduated shells, fitted with detachable sconces accented with scroll and leaf decorations, raised on fluted waisted stems with conforming decoration from bases with quatrefoil sunken well encompassed by further acanthus leaves and scrolls. Sheffield 1814 by Kirkby, Waterhouse & Co (James Kirkby & Joseph Waterhouse). Height 290.
