Notes:'The Mulga Queen' was the name of an abandoned gold mine several hundred miles north of Kalgoorlie that the artist used to visit in the early 1960s when only a few wandering aborigines frequented it to draw water from the well. The composition holds on the central figure of the woman - which gives the title its double meaning. Is the shape beside the woman a child or a rock? And the other forms, are they figures or mulga bushes? ... The pale pinks, greys and black colours of the painting heighten the effect of heat which drains colour.
