Lot Description:Silver and Copper Gau (portable shrine), Tibet Derge, 19th Century
usually kept at home, when travelling it is carried as a personal amulet box, by means of lugs on either side through which a carrying ribbon is passed. With it’s front of beaten and repousse silver worked to resemble a scrolling flowering vine into which are set the astamangala or 8 auspicious symbols of Buddhism. The back of plain copper is covered by the red cloth carrying case, with a small window at the front to display the owner’s personal protector. The contents of the Gau apprear to be medicinal – thus the Buddha of Long Life is invoked. Height 6 1/3” (16.3cm -
