  • Notes:
Lawrence Daws has enjoyed an illustrious six-decade career as a painter and print-maker best known for his interior and exterior landscapes. Daws was born in Adelaide but has been a long-term resident of the Sunshine Coast in South-East Queensland. He has held more than seventy solo exhibitions, including retrospectives at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1966 and the Brisbane City Gallery in 2000. Daws Þrst exhibited in 1954 at the Victorian Artists' Society Gallery in Melbourne and he was also represented in the seminal 1961 Whitechapel Gallery exhibition of Recent Australian Painting, alongside luminaries including Brett Whiteley and Charles Blackman. He has exhibited in around forty group exhibitions during the course of his career. Bettina and Desmond MacAulay observed in the 2010 Lawrence Daws catalogue, "By 1983 the complexity, depth and deployment of the artist's inßuences, themes, motifs, and mature use of symbol and metaphor were well established. Especially prominent were transformative ideas from Jung, Kant, Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Hermann Hesse, and images derived from reßections on sacred geometry, architecture, Piero della Francesca, paleogeography and geological formations, mandalas, alchemy, Tarot, German Idealism, the Bible, the artist's extensive travels and his reading of European writers."1 In Murray Bridge Landscape the geological and archaeological overtones alluded to are clearly evident. Daws is a significant Australian artist who was acknowledged for his contribution to the visual arts when he was awarded two honorary doctorates by universities in Queensland - GrifÞth University in 1992 and the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2000. His works are included in corporate, private, State, national and university collections. Daws is also represented in international collections including Auckland City Art Gallery (New Zealand), Tate Gallery (London), the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Edinburgh), Yale University (Connecticut, USA) and the National Gallery of China (Beijing, China).
