    Group of three to Daniel W Powell, RN.
    (i) China Medal 1857-60 w/2c 'Canton 1857' and 'Taku Forts 1858' (unnamed as issued). (ii) New Zealand Medal, reverse dated 1860 to 1861 (D W Powell, Bos. Mate. HMS Niger), impressed naming. (iii) Turkish Crimea Medal 1855, 'La Crimea' (unnamed as issued).
  • Provenance:
    Purchased from a Hayward and Hall list, July 1969, which did not include the Turkish Crimea Medal.
  • Notes:
    Entitled to Crimea Medal 1854-56 w/c 'Sebastopol' for service while on HMS Rodney. Powell was born at Gosport, Hants on 1 September 1831. He began his RN service as a Boy 2nd class on HMS Victory. He retired from RN as a Chief Officer in 1888 after 37 years service. Longley (RN & RM) notes that medal with these dates issued to 13 officers and 37 naval ratings, including Powell, and 16 NCOs and men of Royal Marines (total 66). With extensive research by Capt K Douglas-Morris, who noted in a letter, dated 5 October 1976, to owner: 'I have never met a better climb up the GC [good conduct] ladder than that seen in the case of Powell, -its super.'
