  • Notes:
Langlois' practice has been to sketch the landscape 'en plein air' when making preparatory studies for large canvases. He is dedicated to using space, distance and light and to capture the vastness of the Australian landscape and seas. Langlois' paintings are portrayals of a timeless environment in which people have come and gone. The viewer will be subjected to vast distances and large panoramas that undoubtedly point to a sense of longing. Atmosphere and weather are two main focal points for Langlois which he evokes through a strong use of colour. He uses his camera extensively to capture the nuances of tone, structure and colour in land and sea that he uses for reference in his paintings. Simon Gregg, who featured Langlois in his 2011 book, New Romantics: Darkness and Light in Australian Art, uses words like 'romantic', 'longing' and 'melancholy' to describe the artist's signature style and aesthetic but says his " true subject might be the infinite. He has fashioned a career out of creating tantalising subjects that he suspends permanently beyond our grasp. " The work of Chris Langlois is being celebrated with a major touring exhibition 'Points in Time', a survey of Langlois' work over the past decade curated by Katherine Roberts and Simon Gregg. The Tour began in September 2013 at the Manly Art Gallery & Museum, NSW and will conclude in November 2014. The exhibition is at the Gippsland Art Gallery, VIC from 18 January - 10 March 2014.
