  • Notes:
Robert MacPherson was born in 1937 in Brisbane. Inspired by the American Abstract Expressionism, he began his artistic career by experimenting with colour field painting. He first exhibited his work in 1973 and has exhibited regularly since then throughout Australia. His practice operates in the spaces between language and image, high and low art, the sacred and profane. The two drawings by MacPherson in this collection belong to a prolific series of drawings, 555 Frog Poems, which pretend to be the work of Robert Pene, a grade IV student at St Joseph Convent and ripped from a schoolboy's notebook with merit stamps visible. It is a kind of alter ego for MacPherson who, like Pene was also convent educated.
