    1923 Rolls-Royce 20hp Barker Barrel Body
    Chassis: 5957 Engine: G282
  • Notes:
The change of motoring from a narrow Edwardian elite to a widening and greatly increased form of popular transport in the 1920s is in evidence with the decision of Rolls-Royce to abandon its one model policy. Therefore in 1922 a 'smaller' Rolls-Royce was introduced alongside the famous 'Silver Ghost'. The smaller Rolls-Royce, the 20HP, still featured a wheelbase of 10ft 9in. The in-line six-cylinder engine featured overhead valves in a detachable cylinder head which fitted a monobloc casting for the cylinder block. Coil ignition replaced the more familiar dual ignition whilst a three speed gearbox with left-hand change replaced the right-hand gate change. Normal semi-elliptic rear springs were fitted in place of the Silver Ghost's cantilevers. It was still however a true Rolls-Royce in its attention to detail and splendid finish. The incredible example of a 1923 Rolls-Royce 20HP offered is fitted with a marvellous Barker Barrel body - one of the most classic and sought after of all the coach built body shapes, so called due to the bulbous, rounded section of the side panels. This original body has never been off the car and all parts of the car are as it left the factory, along with its tools, the wiring conduit and connections including its very rare tail light switch. This vehicle was delivered new to Australia in 1923 to its first owner R.Ramsay, and was the first bodied 20HP to arrive in the country. This beautiful motor car is surely one of the most original examples of the Barker Barrel bodied 20HP in the world. It is complete with a full set of factory build sheets, complete original dashboard and binnacle instruments, with numbered floor boards, original luggage rack and Auster rear screen and original Barker dipping system. It has had a complete engine rebuild by the Derby Works along with the generator and tail-shaft rebuilt and a correct new generator core and correct new fabric covered wiring. The car we are told drives very well indeed and has undertaken many long trips and rallies in Australia. It has six wheel equipment with well based wheels supplied by Rolls-Royce in 1926 and has a full set of weather equipment including side curtains, the correct original shock absorbers and under-trays for engine and transmission. This very fine Vintage automobile is complemented by a gorgeous period picnic set. Its current custodian is just the fifth owner in its 90 year history from when the vehicle first landed new in Australia.
