Notes:Born in Brisbane, William (Bill) Robinson devoted much of his early life to painting education - both as a student and later, a teacher. He attended the Central Technical College in Brisbane from 1955-56, and following his early career as an art instructor, became the Head of the Painting department at Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1982. Robinson won the Archibald prize for the first time in 1987, and retired from teaching in 1989 to be a full-time painter. He went on to win the Wynne prize twice, once in 1990 and then again in 1996, and achieved success in the Archibald for the second time in 1995. Initially his work was focused on the depiction of intimate and personal subjects, indeed his Archibald and Wynne successes had all been with self-portraits. However, by the 1990s his paintings had evolved to extraordinary scenes of the Australian bush, and the complexity and detail as seen here in (Wattle) trees with approaching storm soon placed him at the forefront of contemporary landscape painting. Robinson once remarked:'Living in the country - everything moves - the seasons, the clouds, nothing is setÉ You begin to realise you re in a landscape that is really the crust of the earthÉ we're all just spinning through space.'
