A Roman Bronze Military Diploma of Discharge & Citizen, c.160AD
After serving 25 years in a Roman auxiliary unit a soldier named Decem was granted Roman citizenship as well as legalization of his existing or future marriage. This was important for his children who thus became roman citizens and his full legal heirs under roman law. His wife was not granted citizenship. A diploma, copied from an original in Rome, serves as evidence of these civic rights and no doubt was preserved as an important legal document by its recipient and his descendants.
