Lot Description:Boer War Diaries
consisting of three handwritten notebooks. Written by Edwin Armstrong Stebbing (born 30 Aug 1876, Poona, India) Lance Corporal in the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment. Contains very detailed information on troop movement, experience under fire. Samples: "A shell went through the wall knocking a man over and when the dust had cleared the first one we distinguished was Will standing over the man…We had not seen Will since the day before and this shell burst only a few yards from him. Another shell killed Bowden of E company. It now turned into a very heavy artillery duel, Boer guns shelling us from three sides, our guns returned the fire. About 11 o’clock the Boers fire ceased." "Monday 15th up at 2am, struck camp to leave but it was 6 before we moved off for Springfield. Across little Angela on a footbridge thrown acoss by the Engineers and a pontoon bridge for transport." -
