  The Doll
  Lovingly created by a love lost seaman sometime in the 19th century. This piece was originally created from hippopotamus ivory (If you look at it with a magnifying glass you will see the tight parallel lines of the hippopotamus grain). The ebony feet were later added by local master carver Owen Mapp, who confirmed that it was common for sailors in the 19th century to pick up hippo tusks around the African Coast to carve and trade. Such sailors would often be inspired by the distant memories of their long left girlfriends.
