Modified 'Outlaw' style wide-body Porsche 911 Targa
  • Notes:
In 1963 the Porsche 911 was launched, and it was quickly hailed a masterpiece. Sixty years later it is still being made in fundamentally the same iconic shape, albeit changed in just about every conceivable way including size. But that original 911 endured in its initial form well into the '70s, with ever more performance and a proliferation of models. Porsche's 911 was continually developed and the G-series (launched in August 1973 and produced until July 1974) brought many changes to the model to meet legislative requirements around the world for both impact safety and emissions. All G-series wore new impact bumpers for low-speed crash protection, driven by new rules in the USA, while the engine size was increased to 2687cc with the use of K-Jetronic CIS Bosch fuel injection in two of the three models, the 911 and 911S now rated at 110 kW and 129 kW respectively. The move to 2.7 litres was the first of many over the 911's lifetime, as were various specification and equipment improvements which could be best described as evolutionary rather than revolutionary, until the switch to water-cooled engines in 1998. An enduring motoring legend, the Porsche 911 has timeless styling that has become the most widely recognised sports car shape ever created. In a nod to the ‘Outlaw’ style of modified Porsche 911s, here we offer a classic example. Originally a 1974 Targa finished in Mexico Blue, this Porsche 911 was originally imported from the UK as a RHD rolling shell – with gearbox but minus engine – in the early ‘90s, and then built up by Porschafile in Williamstown (Melbourne). It was modified with original metal Carrera wide body rear guards, and then refinished in Grand Prix white, while in the tail went a 1984 European spec 3.2 litre flat six engine said to be producing 170kW on Motronic fuel-injection with stainless steel exhaust system, and mated to a 915 five-speed gearbox with 7:31 final drive. Along with the wider body and new colour, this 911 ‘Outlaw’ got a genuine Porsche whale tail and chin spoiler, driving lights, original Fuchs wheels with polished rims and black centres, a galvanized black-painted bonnet from a 1988 model, electric exterior mirrors (not wired up), Carrera rear deck badge and twin struts for the engine lid. Inside went an all leather Carrera interior trim in black (re-coloured in 2006), a retrimmed (by Garry Blackman) 930 Turbo steering wheel, central locking, electric windows, new carpets, Carrera graduated oil pressure/temp gauge, and a Panasonic AM/FM CD player head unit with removable face, Phillip under-seat amplifier, and six Cerwin Vega speakers. Other extensive work included larger 930 Turbo front calipers and thicker torsion bars, the suspension rebuilt to firmer 1984 Carrera spec by Pedders, with Carrera front and rear sway bars added. There were also stainless steel braided brake lines and a front strut brace. Between its previous owner and our vendor, who purchased this very special Porsche 911 Targa in February 2004, maintenance along the way has included a new clutch and rebuilt differential, a steel replacement for the steering shaft bush, rebuilt starter motor, two new tyres and a new battery. In good condition throughout, there are some stone chips to bonnet and front bumper, a small section of stitching on driver’s seat needs repair, and the interior lights are not working. Always garaged whilst in Australia, our vendor has cherished this unique Porsche 911, maintaining and updating it as needed. In good ‘driver’ condition throughout and formerly on full registration, it will be sold with extensive receipts and two keys. The Porsche 911 Targa ‘Outlaw’ is being sold unregistered.
