    1928 CHEVROLET TRUCK
Vintage Chev truck ideal for promotional use
  • Notes:
Though Ford was the instigator of American automotive mass production, by the late 1920s Chevrolet had set up itself as the blue oval's most serious competitor - and indeed still is so, more than 100 years later. In 1928 Chevrolet launched its AB National series of models, having overtaken Ford in the sales race the previous year, with its new range encompassing a wide variety of body styles including trucks. Looking very similar to the 1927 Series AA Capitol, the 1928 Chevrolet AB National was powered by its existing 171ci four-cylinder engine featuring minor modifications and an electric fuel pump, to produce 35 hp at 2200 rpm. It was paired with a 4 speed (in the USA) manual transmission, while braking was provided to all four wheels for the first time. The wheelbase of the AB National increased by four inches to 107in, while its Alemite chassis lubrication system was new, as was an indirectly lit instrument panel. Documented production numbers show that 1,193,212 Series AB Nationals were produced in a variety of body styles, of which around 70,000 were made in Canada, many of them exported to Australia for bodying locally. Thought to have been purchased new for use in Colac (regional Victoria) as a fire truck, this 1928 Chevrolet AB National model flatbed truck was on display in a museum in Beaufort (Victoria) until just a few weeks ago. Recommissioned by its owner of more than 20 years, the ’28 Chev is an older restoration that still presents nicely. Wearing a Lane’s Motors, Melbourne build plate with the stock number 5531, the Chevy truck was restored by its previous owner, a collector, and today wears a wooden ‘C’ cab style body, with original metal front guards and bonnet, and timber load bed. It sits on a set of wooden wheels too, while the running boards and rear guards are crafted from aluminium. The ’28 Chevrolet’s Teal Blue paintwork is sound on the bonnet, but a bit weathered on the timber cab, while the black-painted front guards and radiator cowl present well, as does the vinyl trimmed cab roof. Varnished timber strakes protect the back of the cab from shifting loads, while a similarly finished toolbox is mounted on the left-hand running board. Inside, the bench seat is trimmed in brown vinyl and in lovely condition, in an otherwise factory-original cabin, with the speedo showing 22,698 miles. Under the bonnet is a 171ci four-cylinder engine complete with a period Delco-Remy generator. A moto meter radiator cap completes the period picture. Two new front tyres were also fitted prior to its museum stay and have done less than 100km since. A lovely period piece that drives nicely with room for cosmetic improvement, it would be ideal for promotional work, such as at a winery or restaurant. Currently registered on club permit it is being sold unregistered
