RELATED WORK: Other works from this series depicting a military aeroplane crash near a Wimmera town are in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne (one work dated 17 June 1942) and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (two works, one of which is also dated 17 June 1942). A letter from Sidney Nolan to Sunday Reed sent from Dimboola in June 1942 refers to this group of works: 'I can understand what you mean about the aeroplane drawings. The fact is all I really saw was flat and shining and suddenly very close to the sky and over the house and trees... breasts and things as you say have imposed themselves in the gap.' In November 1942 Nolan returned to the theme of the Wimmera aeroplane crash with his oil on paper on board, Going to School in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne.
