Notes:RELATED WORK: Barry Pearce, Sidney Nolan, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 2007, cat. 6, p. 92 (illus.). Painted in Melbourne in the autumn of 1940, this is part of a small series Nolan painted soon after returning from Sydney where he had been publicly lauded for his set designs for the Russian ballet. He was then preparing for his first exhibition that opened on the 11th June at his studio at 230 Russell Street.
