  Estate Mount Eliza, The John Fairfax Collection Sydney 1973-2002, purchased at Sotheby's Catalogue of Paintings and Drawers from the Studio of William Dobell Sydney 19th November 1973, lot 100, illustrated. Sotheby's The John Fairfax Collection Sydney 17th-11-2002, lot 8 illustrated, reference J Gleeson "The Portrait of Dobell took a lifetime to paint" Walk About July 1971.
• Notes:
  In 1965 the American collector Harold Mertz commissioned Dobell to paint a self-portrait. Dobell began several studies of which this is one of the most finished, and varying compositions over four years (a larger version is in the Art Gallery South Australia, the final portrait was sold in 2000). Although known as No 1 this is certainly the 5th and penultimate oil study.
